Dental Health

Common Dental Conditions

Understanding these conditions can help you spot early warning signs and take action before problems worsen.

Cavities (Tooth Decay)

Cavities are permanently damaged areas in the hard surface of your teeth that develop into tiny holes. They are caused by a combination of bacteria, frequent snacking, sugary drinks, and inadequate tooth cleaning.

Symptoms

  • Toothache or spontaneous pain
  • Tooth sensitivity to sweet, hot, or cold foods
  • Visible holes or pits in teeth
  • Brown, black, or white staining on tooth surfaces

Prevention & Management

  • Brush teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
  • Floss daily to remove plaque between teeth
  • Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks
  • Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a mild, common form of gum disease that causes irritation, redness, and swelling of the gingiva — the part of your gum around the base of your teeth. It is reversible with prompt professional care and good home hygiene.

Symptoms

  • Swollen or puffy gums
  • Gums that bleed easily when brushing or flossing
  • Dusky red or dark red gums
  • Bad breath (halitosis)

Prevention & Management

  • Brush gently along the gumline twice a day
  • Floss at least once daily
  • Use an antiseptic mouthwash regularly
  • Schedule professional cleanings every 6 months

Periodontitis

Periodontitis is a serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue and, without treatment, can destroy the bone supporting your teeth. It is most often the result of untreated gingivitis and requires professional intervention.

Symptoms

  • Gums that pull away (recede) from teeth
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Pus between teeth and gums
  • Painful chewing or persistent bad breath

Prevention & Management

  • Treat gingivitis early before it progresses
  • Never skip professional dental cleanings
  • Avoid smoking, which significantly increases risk
  • Manage systemic conditions such as diabetes that can worsen gum disease

Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity causes sharp, temporary pain in response to certain triggers such as hot, cold, sweet, or acidic foods and drinks. It occurs when enamel wears down or gums recede, exposing the underlying dentin.

Symptoms

  • Sharp pain when consuming hot or cold foods and drinks
  • Discomfort when eating sweet or acidic items
  • Pain triggered by cold air
  • Mild to intense sensitivity when brushing or flossing

Prevention & Management

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle technique
  • Brush with a desensitising toothpaste containing fluoride
  • Limit acidic foods and drinks that erode enamel
  • Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth
